EMFs, or Electromagnetic Fields, bombard us every second of the day.  They come not only from WI-FI, but from all electrical appliances, power outlets, cell phones and towers, microwave ovens, power lines and more.  Prolonged exposure to EMFs is said to cause health issues, some even say cancer.  EMF or EMR is a general name of all types of electromagnetic radiation.

If you are sensitive to EMFs, here are a few symptoms you might experience (Source: http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/embs/comar/Hypersensitivity.htm).

  • Nervous system symptoms, like fatigue, stress and sleep disturbances
  • Skin symptoms, like facial prickling, burning sensations and rashes
  • Body symptoms, like pains and aches in your muscles
  • Eye symptoms, such as burning sensations
  • Foggy thinking and depression
  • A variety of less common symptoms, like ear, nose, and throat symptoms and digestive disorders
  • Infertility
  • Leukemia in children, breast cancer or cancer clusters have been linked to high exposure to EMFs.

Yikes!  So if we’re not planning on going off the grid anytime soon, or going Amish, what can we do?

Tips To Protect Yourself From EMFs

1)  Move The Cell Phone Away From The Noggin’ And Use Your Noggin’

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies cell phone radiation as a Group 2B carcinogen and recommends that “consumers should consider ways of reducing their exposure.”

With that said, why would you sleep with a cell phone near you?  If you keep your cellphone next to your bed, or charge it on your bedside table, you are exposing yourself to EMF’s while you sleep.  The same goes if you have an alarm clock near your bed.  It’s a great idea to give your body a rest and move these items into another room.  If this isn’t possible, most sources say to move cell phones at least 4 feet away from your head to protect your brain.

With the potential cancer risk, it’s a “no brainer” not to expose your baby. Cell phones are not a chew toy or play toy for babies – don’t let them near them!

2)  Let’s Go Airport Mode

Airport mode isn’t just for airplanes.  Airplane mode cuts off all wireless transmissions from your cellular device and also stops cellphone radiation.  If you are listening to a soothing MP3 meditation or hypnosis recording before bed, you can put your non-charging phone in AIRPORT MODE on a nightstand and then fall asleep with no EMF exposure from your phone.  You won’t be able to make a call, but you get all the benefits of the recording or meditation music without the EMF exposure.  You can also put your phone on airport mode when you have to carry it next to your body, or when not in use.  It will help save your battery use a little too, and maybe save those family jewels as well (or boobies for those of you who put your phone in your bra!).

3)  Cell Phones Make Terrible Bed Fellows

Surfing or sleeping with your cell in bed?  In addition to exposure to the EMF’s, the light on your phone screen can wreak havoc with your body and interfere with sleep patterns.  Plus there’s all kinds of crazy stuff  floating around on the internet about cell phones melting down in the middle of the night and starting fires and burning people.

4) Make Friends With The Off Button

Limit exposure to phones and computers by using them when only necessary and power them down when not in use. Many people leave their cell phones on ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT LONG.  If you’re not using your phone for an extended period of time, turn it off or put it in airplane mode to protect yourself from EMFs.  You can also increase the distance between you and the source of EMF wherever possible, like stop using that laptop on your LAP for example. And make it a habit to use the speaker function.  Do you leave a computer or WIFI on when you leave the house and leave your pet behind?  Be mindful of this as well.  Pets can be affected by EMFs as well!

5)  Use Protection
