Does This Diabetes Drug Help You Live Longer?

Want to live longer?  Scientists are researching a common diabetes drug called metformin that may hold the key to helping people live longer – like to 120 years old!

Oh THAT?  That was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor.

Live Longer With Metformin?

Evidence is mounting that metformin may fight the fundamental causes of aging and help people live a longer, healthier life. A new clinical trial called Targeting Aging with Metformin, or TAME, is scheduled to begin in the US Winter 2016.

Medical News Today reported results that this pill may slow the aging process and increase lifespan in roundworms and lifespan improvement in middle-aged male mice .  And a published study by scientists at Cardiff University showed that human patients treated with metformin showed a “small but statistically significant improvement in survival compared with the cohort of non-diabetics.”

Nir Barzilai, director of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Institute for Aging Research and co-leader of the TAME study, told Tech Times:

“People on metformin get 30 percent less cancers, almost every cancer except maybe prostate cancer. There are fewer studies, but there is a signal that metformin prevents cognitive decline. Additionally, there is a study that suggests that people on metformin who, when they start taking metformin, are more obese and sicker than people without diabetes, they outlive people without diabetes.”

But is this a safe drug?  WEBMD reports metformin side effects here.  They include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, weakness, or a metallic taste in the mouth may occur.  The list is not inclusive and there are other precautions, interactions and a rare, sometimes fatal condition.  Isn’t there ALWAYS a rare, sometimes fatal condition?

So, do you think you would you take a daily pill and risk the side effects if it enabled you to live longer, say 10 or 20 years longer? For now, we’ll have to see what the studies say.  Until then, a healthy diet with chockful of anti-oxidants which fight oxidation and supplements with plant based compounds like TA-65® which helps to combat obvious effects of cellular aging are excellent choices and are side-effect free.
