Last weekend’s International Salon & Spa Expo in Long Beach did not disappoint.  Hailed as the West Coast’s largest total beauty event, this show saw more than 40,000 attendees and a sold-out expo floor of over 350 top international hair, nails, skin care, cosmetics, health and wellness brands and services.

This show is NOT for the faint of heart, OR those with sensitive ears:  this is a fast-paced, everyone talk at once, “look at my booth,” buy my product, blaring music PARTY about what’s on trend in the beauty industry, mixed in with great demonstrations and lots of education for salon owners.  And oh, did I mention DEALS?

This show is produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), the largest organization of salon professionals and targeted to salon and spa professionals, of course.

Here were some of the highlights:

My eyes IMMEDIATELY followed the shiny bling – these are fashionable hair accessories no matter what your age, that are able to transform and revitalize a new look or add a vintage touch in minutes.  Who doesn’t like this message from the company president?

“Put your heart into your product and what you believe. Try to make people happy and you’ll always be successful”
– Mireya Villarreal, Founder and Designer : Pink Pewter

Big Sexy Hair went “bombshell” for the show, with iconic images of Marilyn Monroe:

Speaking of icons, Vidal Sassoon of course had a major presence there, with models that scream “Sassoon” with Vidal’s signature short, sleek look:

While models and hairdressers showed how the perfect cut was done, this real life customer got videotaped while an OPM Organic Permanent Makeup specialist applied permanent lip makeup using U.S. patented, organic pigments:

Think those spray on tans are horribly bad for you?  I was educated by Bronzebiologic.com that their spray-on tan doesn’t contain any toxic ingredients, dyes, perfumes, or artificial colors, and is botanical and safe!  This is definitely something I’ll be writing more about closer to summer.

This year’s HOT LIST at ISSE contained this little product called Color Wow Root Cover Up.   This mineral powder covers gray roots instantly and even covers dark regrowth without peroxide.  It applies directly to dry/styled hair, is super easy to apply and temporarily binds to hair until shampooed out.  $34.50 in your choice of 6 colors.  The late Joan Rivers has a similar product you still can purchase online called Great Hair Day Fill in Powder.

The technology at these shows is always advancing – now there are nail polishes with gel durability and no UV:  Caption by Young Nails has the durability of gel polish that  stays chip-free for 2-3Xs longer than average polish and dries 3x faster without DBP, toluene, or formaldehyde. YIPEE!!!!!

Hair extensions are seeing some advances with the “older” I-tip extensions moving over to make room for tape extensions, the “halo” string and the ever popular clip-in extensions.  The tape extensions can’t really be felt in the hair, which is a plus, but they are only for styles that lay flat.  You can wash your hair with tape extensions and they will last for about 3 months until the tape needs to be replaced.  How did I learn all this?  Talking to all the young girls who don’t need hair extensions to begin with!

Watch for more articles from products found at this fab show.

Be sure to ask your stylist what’s new in beauty, and chances are he or she has seen it or heard about it at the ISSE Show!
